Your feelings deserve a voice

Dear Beautiful Soul,

Have you ever said “I’m fine” when you were anything but fine?

Have you ever been hurt by something someone said, but instead of expressing it, you stayed silent?

Maybe you didn’t want to create conflict.

Maybe you were afraid of being judged.

Maybe you didn’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.

Or perhaps somewhere along the way, you learned that it was safer to keep your feelings to yourself.

Many of us were taught how to behave, how to achieve, and how to take care of others, but we were never really taught how to express what we feel.

So we hold things inside.

We smile when we’re hurting.

We say yes when we want to say no.

We pretend something didn’t bother us when it did.

And eventually, all those unspoken emotions can begin to create resentment, frustration, distance, or even disconnection from ourselves.

Expressing your feelings is not a weakness.

It is part of healthy communication.

There is a difference between reacting from an emotion and expressing an emotion.

Reacting might sound like:

“You never listen to me!”

Expressing might sound like:

“I feel unheard when I try to explain what I need, and I’d really like us to talk about it.”

One attacks.

The other communicates.

Learning to express our feelings means taking responsibility for what is happening within us while giving another person the opportunity to understand us.

But sometimes the greatest obstacle isn’t knowing how to express our feelings.

It’s believing we’re allowed to.

Perhaps an Invisible Belief™ underneath the surface is whispering:

“My feelings aren’t important.”

“If I tell the truth, they’ll reject me.”

“I shouldn’t be angry.”

“I don’t want to be a burden.”

“Keeping the peace is more important than expressing what I need.”

When we carry beliefs like these, silence can begin to feel safer than honesty.

But healthy relationships require honest communication.

The people who love us cannot always know what we’re feeling unless we tell them.

And expressing your feelings doesn’t mean that everyone will agree with you.

It simply means you are allowing yourself to be seen.

Your challenge for this week

For the next 7 days, practice putting your feelings into words.

At least once each day, pause and ask yourself:

What am I feeling right now?

Then complete this sentence:

“I feel __________ because __________.”

You can write it in your journal, say it privately to yourself, or, when appropriate, share it with someone you trust.

And at least once this week, I challenge you to express something you would normally keep inside.

It doesn’t need to be dramatic.

Maybe it’s:

“I felt hurt by what happened.”

“I’m overwhelmed and I need some help.”

“I really appreciated what you did for me.”

“I’m disappointed.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“I miss you.”

“I love you.”

Remember, expressing feelings isn’t only about difficult emotions.

Sometimes we also forget to express the beautiful ones.

Tell someone you appreciate them.

Tell someone they matter.

Tell someone you are grateful they’re part of your life.

And as you practice this week, notice what happens inside you.

If expressing yourself feels uncomfortable, ask:

“What am I afraid might happen if I say what I truly feel?”

Your answer may reveal an Invisible Belief™ that has been influencing you for a very long time.

Your feelings do not need to control you.

But they do deserve to be acknowledged.

And sometimes finding the courage to say “This is how I feel” is one of the most powerful ways we can honor ourselves and deepen our relationships with others.

So this week…

Give your feelings a voice.

With love & light,

Rev. Carmen Gélinas
